This is a thought provoking heartfelt novel intertwined with history and great story telling. Set in a small desert town in 1895, I felt the author gave a realistic portrayal of small town life where predjudices and gossip have the power to ruin a life. Afraid of that happening to her, Mildred Dunlap devises a plan to protect herself and her private way of life. It’s a good plan that backfires only slightly, and leaves Mildred and her partner having to learn to trust that not everyone in town is full of judgement and fear, and that friendship can overcome any obstacle. I highly recommend this novel!
