About The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap

The year 1895 was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; Richard Olney, United States Secretary of State, expanded the effects of the Monroe Doctrine in settling a boundary dispute between the United Kingdom and Venezuela; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for "gross indecency" under Britian's recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When the news of Wilde's conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted by the news of Oscar Wildes' imprisonment. It is chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing. Paulette Mahurin, the author, is a Nurse Practitioner who lives in Ojai, California with her husband Terry and their two dogs--- Max and Bella. She practices women's health in a rural clinic and writes in her spare time. All profits from her book are going to animal rescue, Santa Paula Animal Shelter, the first and only no-kill shelter in Ventura County, CA, where she lives. (see links below on Ventura County Star Article & Shelter) To find out more please go the The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap on facebook or Amazon or e-mail us at the gavatar addresses. Thank you. I wonder why people around here do not keep pets much. Maybe that is because we are a low income country beginning to become a middle income country. OR, maybe it has something to do with the culture. Might be both. I have never played with a cat or a dog. Or any animal for that matter.
Wish it could have been different. But browsing around in blogosphere, and seeing so my blog friends from abroad talk about pets, is getting me to think.
Why not give these adorable little creatures a home, and have a wonderful time with them in return…
Thank you so much for the pictures

    • I’m so sorry, Tatsat, that it took me so long to reply to this. I just found it in my moderation file. Don’t know how I missed it. A very delayed thank you for this lovely communication.

Maybe some day, you’ll encounter a dog, a cat, an animal that you can connect with and then you’ll know what all us animal loving cyber friends are chatting about. It’s a very special bond, a deep love, to connect with a furry friend. Wishing you well. Paulette

  17. fournier0917 says:

Hey Paulette, these are great. My wife Marianne though we love all creatures I are particularly fond of cats, as we have two of our own, MainCoon male and female 8.5 and 6. 5 kilos respectively. When the male stretches out, he measures from head to tail end 4 feet long, and the female about 3.5 feet. That’s a lot of cat to love, I’ll tell you. Jean-Jacques

    • Wow, those are big cats. Perhaps one day a photo and poem for your furry kids? A lot more to love… purrrrrrrrrrfect. 🙂

      • fournier0917 says:

No problem…I will send you photo for both and Kallista and Kaspar, and a poem I’ve written on Kallista, though as I’ve yet to write one on Kaspar…which I will do soon now that I am reminded with this correspondence. How do you want them, to be sent, by e-mail or to your site? though I’m not sure if I have an e-mail for you… JJ

      • I love their names. Yes, you mustn’t leave Kaspar out. By all means please feel free to share right here so all can see your furry kids and your great poetry. If, however, you prefer to e-mail me just let me know and I’ll get my address to you. Can’t wait to see them and read the poem. 🙂

Not sure if the two pictures will show, if not send me your e-mail and I will forward the pics separately. The poem was inspired by one of Kallista’s eye problem in 2009.

        “ I The Cat ”
~ on an ailing day ~

        I strain to see
        With but one eye,
        My impulse
        Aim’s to spy,
        Or entice
        Birds or flies,
        Out of the sky…

        I effort yet
        With a lame eye,
        Imposed by mites
        On a hellish plight,
        That may encroach
        Of lifeline’s sight
        And sense of smell…

        Besieged am I
        By acute stress,
        As I’ve no way
        To so express,
        Should I go blind
        Or loose my scent,
        I’ll ne’er again gaze
        At moon amazed,
        Nor sense a morrows’
Night time finds! ode to Kallista

      • fournier0917 says:

Hi Paulette…I tried to send the two pictures of Kallista (tortoiseshell colour) and Kaspar (tabby grey silver colour) to your blog site with the ode to Kallista, “I The Cat” poem. but I don’t think the picture portion worked. If you send me your e-mail to, fon.int@sympatico.ca I will forward said pictures to you my dear friend.

      • I love the poem, Ode to Kallista.

The photos didn’t show. I e-mailed you. Looking forward to seeing them. 🙂

      • Here is the link for my friend JJ Fournier’s site. Cat lovers you will like this one, it’s a poem to his cat, Kallista, with photos of Kallista and Kaspar; two gorgeous cats.

  18. Dear Paulette, I hope the following link about a beautiful puppy being awaken from its nap by its owner with so much tenderness will give you a smile you have been giving us here http://screen.yahoo.com/puppy-wakes-205914028.html

    • I hadn’t seen that but LOVED it. I’m smiling so wide my cheeks are hurting. That has to be one of the most precious videos I’ve ever seen. That little guy is just too adorable and wonderful for words.

Hey my cyber friends, if you have 2 minutes watch this video and enjoy something incredibly special.

Thank you so much for this link, Hulya. 🙂 Feel free to stop by with any others anytime. 🙂

      • I am glad you didn’t mind, Paulette. I hesitated first but then, knowing your dedicated stance on animals, I felt the urge to share it with you. As for “any others” you invite me to, I will now at least know my welcome – and I may take you up on your kindness :o)

    • gita4elamats says:

I checked this out, too and now I’m going to bed with a big grin on my face. 😛

    • Lovely. All you and any other comments, shares, etc. from any of my cyber friends are always welcome here. It thrills me to connect with you and have you feel comfortable to come through my door and originate. I grew up with a family and in a neighborhood where we did that, just dropped in and it was always warm and welcoming. My door is open and I just hope I never make anyone feel unwelcome. Big cyber hug to you. 🙂 p.s. this wasn’t always the case because I had a brother 8 years my senior who was schizophrenic. When he left home (I was around 8 or 9), things dramatically changed, a very mixed bag, but the open door policy was always there.

  19. lgyslaine says:

    They are so cute! 🙂

  20. WordsFallFromMyEyes says:

    I’m in love!

  21. 68ghia says:

A bunch of gorgeous animals here – such a happy thing that they’ve all found forever homes.

    • It’s a very happy thing on so many levels. The shelter’s been having some great turnover of late with lots of adoptions. Very heartwarming for the furry friends, the families and it helps with the turn over in the shelter to create new space for new ones to arrive. 🙂

  22. feelingjoy says:

I so enjoy seeing pictures of these precious animals with their new owners and or in their new homes. Warms my heart. Thank you Paulette. 🙂
