About The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap

The year 1895 was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; Richard Olney, United States Secretary of State, expanded the effects of the Monroe Doctrine in settling a boundary dispute between the United Kingdom and Venezuela; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for "gross indecency" under Britian's recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When the news of Wilde's conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted by the news of Oscar Wildes' imprisonment. It is chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing. Paulette Mahurin, the author, is a Nurse Practitioner who lives in Ojai, California with her husband Terry and their two dogs--- Max and Bella. She practices women's health in a rural clinic and writes in her spare time. All profits from her book are going to animal rescue, Santa Paula Animal Shelter, the first and only no-kill shelter in Ventura County, CA, where she lives. A great subject, for as you say, ‘Great Friendships are the Best, which once in not too often if luck serves it happens, and we have the good fortune of discovering such a gift. Among many I’ve written on the subject, I have two little stories I will send you, to let you decide if and when you wish to keep or share, my very dear great friend… friend JJ

    • I’d love that!Just saw the e-mail and posted both here. They are lovely, JJ. Thank you so much for sharing.

      • “ Friend ”

        ~ a singular entitlement ~

Why do they call me friend…

        What is their cause
        Or purpose

        To judge me worthy,

        That they should levy

        Such expression of regard,

        Entrust this much

        To be bestowed

        Upon my person,

        Thus be asked to manage

        With this impressive status…

        And to this title friend,

        A singular entitlement,

        Who possesses

        Such impartiality

        Could deem me deserving,

        Or capable indeed

        To discharge such obligation,

        Required and implied

        When one is given title,

        That of being called friend…

Why do they call me friend!

This second one, I think you know…

        “ Such Friends ”

        ~ to discover ~

        There are friends

        You take a lifetime

        To discover,

        And such friends

        Who make a lifetime

        A discovery

        Worth the journey…

        In that between,

        There is a friend

        With such affinity,

        As to instantly

        Be a lifetime friend,

  4. What an adorable video. Can’t recall the last time my heart swelled so large nor my smile grew so wide. Why can’t the human race learn from this?
