RECENT REVIEWS FOR THE SEVEN YEAR DRESS

on February 4, 2017
It was amazing what her human spirit could endure! I thoroughly enjoyed this book!
on February 2, 2017
I read this book in two sittings. It was entrancing. Characterizations were spot on. I came away in awe of people able to live through this horror. I won’t forget this read!
on February 3, 2017
Myra was only looking for a room to rent while she was in college. She wasn’t looking for a friend or new family member. When she answered Helen Stein’s ad for a room for rent, she got more than she expected. During the interview, she noticed the number tattooed on Helen’s arm and knew that Helen had a story to tell. Helen recounted her younger years of innocence and fun with her family only to be destroyed by the evil Hitler and the Holocaust. Helen’s friend, Max, had tried to save her and her brother from the Nazis. He had given Helen a pretty dress to try to lift her spirits. After she was captured, she found the dress in a pile of old clothes and clung to that dress to remind her of happier times. Once she was freed, all she had was a scrap left covered in her brother’s blood to remind her of all she endured.
Even though this was a fictional account of the Holocaust, Helen’s experiences were heart wrenching because we know that atrocities such as this actually happened. Paulette Mahurin has done an excellent job in retelling the events based on the life and memories of a young survivor. However, Helen is telling this story to a young woman so I felt that it was inappropriate for her to mention all the times she masturbated and the in-depth details of her sexual assault.

I enjoyed the historical value of this book. Highly recommend.

About The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap

The year 1895 was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; Richard Olney, United States Secretary of State, expanded the effects of the Monroe Doctrine in settling a boundary dispute between the United Kingdom and Venezuela; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for "gross indecency" under Britian's recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When the news of Wilde's conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted by the news of Oscar Wildes' imprisonment. It is chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing. Paulette Mahurin, the author, is a Nurse Practitioner who lives in Ojai, California with her husband Terry and their two dogs--- Max and Bella. She practices women's health in a rural clinic and writes in her spare time. All profits from her book are going to animal rescue, Santa Paula Animal Shelter, the first and only no-kill shelter in Ventura County, CA, where she lives. (see links below on Ventura County Star Article & Shelter) To find out more please go the The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap on facebook or Amazon or e-mail us at the gavatar addresses. Thank you. Fantastic work.Saving 99 dogs from a kill shelters. lovely lady

    • I’m a very small part of a huge network of wonderful people out there helping the dogs. There’s endless work as the number of dogs in kill shelters discarded daily is overwhelming and the resources are challenged to get as many freed and into good homes as possible. I’m grateful for your kind words of support, Lou. Thank you. ❤

  3. Great reviews again. Congrats to you and to the 99 doggies in happy homes. 😀 ❤ ❤

That’s a wonderful start to the year! Everyone who is involved should feel very proud to make such a difference.

    • Hi Clowie! We’re all very happy with the dogs that we can help but and it’s such a huge but there are so many more in shelters than we can get to. But we have to take the good news–the wins–as it comes and keep going. There are so many wonderful people around the world advocating for dogs, and other great underserved groups in need. Happy to do my small part. Always love to see you and hope you and your bipeds are settle in and thriving. ❤
