Harrowing read but brings home the horror of the Holocaust.

Captivating, haunting. ..
It felt like I was in Helen’s living room hearing her story in person.
This book is fictional, but it represents what truly happened with Jewish people during the Holocaust. We hear the story from Helen, a Jewish child living with her family in Germany. As Nazism rises up and the anti-semitism begins to unfold, Helen’s family doesn’t believe or accept it. As the story moves through Kristallnacht and the actions of the SS become more severe, the family makes a decision that will be a turning point in the story. The book is so well researched and fact based, one feels as though it is a memoir. Although everyone knows of the atrocities that took place during that time, especially in the concentration camps, it is always a shock to read or hear of it again. (less)

About The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap
The year 1895 was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; Richard Olney, United States Secretary of State, expanded the effects of the Monroe Doctrine in settling a boundary dispute between the United Kingdom and Venezuela; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for "gross indecency" under Britian's recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When the news of Wilde's conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted by the news of Oscar Wildes' imprisonment. It is chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing.
Paulette Mahurin, the author, is a Nurse Practitioner who lives in Ojai, California with her husband Terry and their two dogs--- Max and Bella. No doubt about the toys, cause your mamma is the bestest. ❤
A lot of happy faces there….makes me happy too to see them.
The happiness ripples cross continents. Dogs do have that effect. And simple small acts of kindness. Hope all’s well with you & Leo and ya’ll have a good weekend. ❤
Still recovering from the trip….
I can well imagine. Traveling is not what it used to be. Take good care and rest up.
What a difference a one day makes in the expressions of the dog’s faces. All the dogs are beautiful. There is never an ugly dog. Hooray to you Paulette and your generosity. You are a real life hero.
Yvonne, so good to see you pop up over the cyber horizon. I hope all’s continuing to be well your end. I completely agree with you that they are all beautiful. It is absolutely amazing to see some of their freedom videos; from in the cage and so despondent to out of the door and confused to the parking lot and oh man that tail comes out from between their legs and wags like crazy. Dogs are my best teachers on resilience, loyalty and being in the moment. I feel lucky my book’s been selling so I’m able to contribute to helping a few dogs but still there are way too many still in cages. Take good care and give your fur babies a hug from me. ❤

Nelson is a mini Choppy!
He does look like a mini Choppy. So darn cute. Choppy has a lot of lookalikes and I love how she looks. ❤
I always love it when I see one of her lookalikes. Poor Paul is probably sick and tired of me pointing them out.
I hear you. I used to take it to an extreme when Terry & I were on vacation and saw a rottie lookalike. “Stop the car,” and I’d get out and meet the dog. True story. So tell Paul he’s got it easy. 🙂
This are all lucky dogs
They sure are, Lou. Very lucky. ❤
