RECENT REVIEWS FOR THE DAY I SAW THE HUMMINGBIRD
AMAZON U.S.
I am a huge fan of Paulette Mahurin’s, so first off, I must comment on her book titles: They’re glorious, all five titles drawing me into themes of injustice and triumph, with wonderful lines like this one from The Day I Saw the Hummingbird, “But you keep them insides mighty,” to resolutions that keep me thinking long after the last pages are turned. The Day I Saw the Hummingbird is haunting. It is relevant, necessary history.

Paulette hasn’t missed a beat, being consistent with the quality of authorship creatively, with that ability to capture and hold the readers attention to the fullest. A great writer, telling captivating stories. Impossible to not enjoy. Terrific!

Paulette Mahurin has delivered another fantastic celebration of the human spirit in this latest novel. From the uplifting cover to the perceptive reflections, this is a well written and insightful look at a bygone era. You know a gifted writer when you’re left wanting more and when you’re still thinking about some of what the characters have endured after you finish reading.
What I especially loved is that it showed the very real impact of the subject matter. There’s no real flat resolution, but rather the suggestion that life is life and that it will rumble on out with these pages. That’s not to say that it doesn’t have a sublime conclusion, because it really does. It’s really hard to find fault because the story, the characters and the writing itself is so moving.
If you haven’t read any of Mahurin’s work, you should check it out. This isn’t my first experience of this very gifted lady, and I’m certain it won’t be my last.
GOODREADS

Free as a hummingbird
Oscar was born into slavery. He never really knew his father but was extremely close with his mother until she passed away. Once she died Oscar decided to go for the freedom they always talked and dreamed about. This is his story of using the Underground Railroad to get to Freedom. This is an emotional yet inspiring story that is sadly part of our history.

Deep and thought provoking
This book is an absolute must read. The cover caught my attention initially, but when I started to read, seeing the world from a black slaves point of view, my mind was opened into a whole new level of horror that these poor souls suffered through.
I won’t give away any spoilers but this is an excellent journey watching one boys life and escape from slave to freedom.

This is quite a gruelling book to read, however, I couldn’t put it down. As it is based on fact it makes you think about mankind’s inhumanity to others and how it is still going on even now. The style of the writing is also easy to read.

This was a great story. It was interesting to see how homosexuality was treated in that time period and in that place.

About The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap
The year 1895 was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; Richard Olney, United States Secretary of State, expanded the effects of the Monroe Doctrine in settling a boundary dispute between the United Kingdom and Venezuela; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for "gross indecency" under Britian's recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When the news of Wilde's conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted by the news of Oscar Wildes' imprisonment. It is chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing.
Paulette Mahurin, the author, is a Nurse Practitioner who lives in Ojai, California with her husband Terry and their two dogs--- Max and Bella. Kindness, kindness. All I see is Kindness in you Paulette and it’s contagious. Loving what you do for the dogs. Thank you and many blessings. Love, Perpetua. Happy New Year to you and yours!
What a lovely thing to say. Thank you so much. And a very Happy New Year to you and your family Perpetua. ❤
Great way to start the year.
It was a very good year for helping the dogs. So much more to do for our fur and human friends. ❤
All those lives saved…and so many people willing to help to do it. Gives you hope in what seems like a nasty world at times.
A lot of wonderful, kindhearted people helped with this effort. And many more that I wasn’t directly involved in. There will always be more need than help is capable of resolving but with each act of kindness the world becomes a much better place. You certainly do your share, my friend. So glad to have connected with you. ❤
Happy New Year!!! A wonderful way to begin a New Year.
Happy New Year to you Rebecca. So true, a happy dog is a great way to start the New Year. ❤
After reading about your books and the doggies, our New Year just keeps getting better, dear Paulette 🙂 We hope the weather has changed and that you all are safe again ❤ Pawkisses for a wonderful healthy New Year to all of you. Make it a good one 🙂 ❤
Aww, thank you so much Binki and your wonderful grandma. We have rain in the forecast for the end of the week and if it materializes we’re all hoping it will put out the last 20% of fire still going on in forest areas. We sure hope your year is filled with lots of pawkisses and love. ❤
In addition to these adoptions Paulette, imagine the dogs that found homes because of people reading your posts. 🙂 Happy New Year to you and all of your Furry Friends.
Aww, thanks so much Colleen. It’s so nice to imagine lots more dogs making it safely to new homes. Looking forward to more with you and your wonderful posts. Hope it’s a great year for you and your family. ❤
Let’s have a great year together Paulette. The more the merrier. 😉
🙂
My best wishes for a healthy an wonderful 2018.Thanks Paulette for all your work to save a lot of dogs
Thank you so much, Lou. And a very Happy New Year to you and your family. ❤
What a fantastic year – you’ve made a lot of dogs happy (and very little in life is better than a happy dog). Here’s to an even better 2018!
Yes, a happy dog is a wonderful experience to behold. And a great 2018 is wished to you Choppy, Sarah, Schooner, and rest of your family. ❤
Reblogged this on Die Erste Eslarner Zeitung – Aus und über Eslarn, sowie die bayerisch-tschechische Region!.
Thank you for the reblog. Very kind of you. ❤
Amazing! God Bless you and your work! Happy New Year!
Thank you so much. I’m grateful I had some luck with my books and was able to help. Nothing like a happy wagging dog gaining freedom and family love. It’s a wonderful experience to be a part of. Glad to do my small part. Happy New Year! ❤
It touches my heart to see these beautiful animals safe Mildred. It is a terrible season for abused and abandoned animals. We must help save them. Thank you so much.
Thank you back for your kind words. There are a lot of really wonderful people doing what they can to help save the dogs, and other animals from being euthanized. Unfortunately, the demand way exceeds the help available. But for each life saved, the ripples of joy and wagging tails is boundless. Hope this is a really good year for you and your fur babies. ❤
For you too, I love fur babies, they love us unconditionally and that is so heartbreaking when they suffer. They depend on us. Have a wonderful new year! 😊 ❤
❤
What a beautiful rose. And so appreciated to see the beauty of nature appear here. So kind of you and thank you very much. ❤
Just wonderful, Paulette – you are one very special human ❤
What a sweet thing to say. Thank you so much. I’m a very small part of a very large group working together to save one dog at a time. And thank goodness for all of them. ❤
