RECENT REVIEW FOR THE DAY I SAW THE HUMMINGBIRD

Although I am more at home writing romantic comedies, as a fan of P.G.Wodehouse, I was intrigued by the title and once I started to read it, I couldn’t put it down. It is difficult to visualise that such conditions existed during the days of slavery. But in this well-researched story, you are plunged at the start into an horrific tale told through the memories of a grown-up who was forced as a slave to witness the death of his father and friends at the hands of a drunken overseer on a sugar plantation in Louisiana just before the outbreak of the Civil War.
We discover through the eyes of a very young slave called Oscar how he manages to survive the ordeal due to the advice his mother Catherine drums into him to hide his anger. He eventually finds his way to freedom, inspired by his mother’s sacrifice and the kindness of strangers who risk their lives to save him.
I found this to be a compelling and uplifting story and my only regret was that we did not discover more about Oscar after he gains his freedom – but perhaps we are due to a sequel?

I read this excellent book in one sitting as I simply couldn’t put it down. Others have described the book far better than I could so I won’t attempt to add more in that regard. I do urge anyone thinking of reading this wonderfully written book to do so. You won’t be disappointed. Not many books leave me thinking about them afterwards but this one certainly does. Thanks to the author for giving us such a great read.

GOODREADS
Brilliantly emotive read. read fast as could not put it down.
I’ve read several books about the Holocaust and Auschwitz but never from this perspective and in this style. The simple and everyday language and style used by the author really magnifies the horror.

About The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap
The year 1895 was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; Richard Olney, United States Secretary of State, expanded the effects of the Monroe Doctrine in settling a boundary dispute between the United Kingdom and Venezuela; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for "gross indecency" under Britian's recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When the news of Wilde's conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted by the news of Oscar Wildes' imprisonment. It is chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing.

Yes and fingers and paws crossed many more to come.
Somehow, I keep missing your posts
Hi Rajiv, You found this one and l’m happy to have you stop by and see some of the lucky & happy dogs. Have a great day. 😍
We actually have a funny situation in India. Lots of strays. No one takes care of them. Can’t put them to sleep, and there are no shelters for them
Sad situation with so many homeless dogs. I wish there were an easy solutions to end some of the suffering. I suppose all one can do is one act of kindness at a time. Thanks again, Rajiv, for stopping by. Always a pleasure to connect with a cyber friend across oceans and continents. 🙂
I think it is so awesome to do this for all the fur babies that need care! Awesome!!!
