RECENT REVIEWS FOR THE DAY I SAW THE HUMMINGBIRD
AMAZON U.S.
Do you want to fall in love? Get your copy of Paulette Mahurin’s “The Day I Saw the Hummingbird,” and I guarantee that you will fall head over heels in love with Oscar, Mahurin’s very young Negro slave who is the center of this story. Mahurin has outdone herself with this novel; among her extraordinary literary achievements, this is her best, in my opinion. I do not rest on my laurels, however, because I know she will wow her readers yet again. “The Day I Saw the Hummingbird” will be hard to top, however. With time, it just might prove to be her masterpiece.
Paulette never disappoints. She is a master story teller. This story will likely haunt you, it has lingered with me for several months now. The characters are very realistic as are the scenes she writes about. I almost felt like I walked the trail with Oscar and smelled what he did, saw what he did, and felt the exhaustion he did. Certainly it’s a story about slavery, but it is also a story about humanity and determination. It does not have a predictable, sappy ending -which I appreciated.

A true story that puts you right I the middle of the holocaust. The descriptive writing made you feel a part of the horror and made you realize this is a part of history we must never forget or repeat.
This book has received a Discovering Diamonds Review:

“The author has not held back in any way and deals sensitively yet matter-of-factly with the atrocities and the sheer spirit of those who had the will and the almost superman-type strength to survive.”

GOODREADS

Having read so many books on the holocaust I wasn’t expecting this one to be any different but i was pleasantly surprised. The story telling is sharp with a factual objectivity that in some ways makes the narrative far more real. It isn’t just a story of pain and suffering but one of life, hope and joy.

This is a bittersweet story of two people meeting in the oncologist’s office and how their relationship developed from there. Much more than a love story begun in the knowledge that life may be short with the need to take each day for what it could bring.

About The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap
The year 1895 was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; Richard Olney, United States Secretary of State, expanded the effects of the Monroe Doctrine in settling a boundary dispute between the United Kingdom and Venezuela; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for "gross indecency" under Britian's recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When the news of Wilde's conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted by the news of Oscar Wildes' imprisonment. It is chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing.
Paulette Mahurin, the author, is a Nurse Practitioner who lives in Ojai, California with her husband Terry and their two dogs--- Max and Bella. This is really great, all those happy dogs. And the reviews.

Congratulations on the great reviews!
It’s really wonderful seeing so many dogs getting a better life.
Hi and thank you so much Clowie. I hope you and your bipeds are all well and enjoying. ❤
Look at all those happy dogs! Josie really looks like Choppy.
Yes, she does. Perhaps a distant cousin? Sweet girls–both of them. ❤
You never know!
🙂
Fantastisc all you do for the dogs
Ahh, thank you so much , Lou. ❤
You are a beautiful soul! Saving these precious creatures from suffering, what a big heart you have! I thank you so much! ❤
What a sweet thing to say. Thank you back. ❤️
Mean every word !

I love your dogs. Just looking at all their faces makes me so happy!
Me too, Marilyn. I just love it. It’s very rewarding to see their happy faces, especially when compared with the caged before photos. ❤
Seeing these photos makes my heart swell with happiness and love. Kudos for the work you’re doing.
It has that effect. I just love seeing their reaction when they are freed. ❤️
😍
😍
YEAH! 🎉🎉🎉Now we’re having a great weekend 🙂 Pawkisses for a wonderful weekend, dear Paulette 🙂 ❤
Ahh you and your loving granny are so sweet. A whole lot of us are going to have a great wagging weekend. Tons of 🐾 kisses right back. ❤️
So pleased for the friends and siblings rescued together.
Me too, Helen. When I see a bonded pair I pledge to keep them together. I remember one pair that were in a kennel together for a long time. They hadn’t come in together but they bonded. One was a big blind dog, the other a little tiny thing. The little one became the eyes for the big dog. Together, they were something wonderful to behold. When they were rescued together and kept together I was so happy. The old ones, the sick one, the overly frightened ones that need a lot of loving attention; the people who rescue them are angels. Happy weekend to you Leo and your gang. ❤
I have been thinking of you! Hope you are well and that life is kind. Thanks for the work you do…as you know…dogs have always been my best friends!! Sweet Blessings…hope your Sunday is filled with love ❤
Ahh, thank you Lorrie. I also hop you and your family are well. We had a rough spell with the Thomas fire and some health issues but thankfully with spring moving into summer and warmer weather, we’re doing well. Working to help the dogs if a gift and I feel fortunate I can contribute the small bit that I do. There’s a huge group I network with to save one dog. One happy dog and hundreds of smiling bipeds. Wishing you and yours a beautiful Sunday. ❤
❤ Thank you!
Good to hear you are doing well!
❤
Just love how the numbers keep exploding! Well done you 😀
Me too, and I feel very lucky to be a part of a vast network of compassionate people helping the dogs. I hope you are doing well. Always wishing you safe travels. ❤
Oh my, what a gorgeous Rose. Thank you so much for this beautiful photo. ❤
Labor of you all is as wonderful as the sunshine who gave life to the rose…
