I would highly recommend this book. It isn’t always pretty but some history isn’t easy to read about. But maybe some of us will walk away with compassion in our hearts for people who are different then us. “Look below the surface and beneath the difference you’ll meet another’s heart”
“Beneath the differences – you meet another’s heart. That’s where the light of love never dims.”
Working myself in the mental health field, I already had a working knowledge of journalist Nellie Bly and her courageous undercover reporting of the heartless conditions inside Blackwell’s Island asylum for women in the 1800s.
‘A Different Kind of Angel’ by Paulette Mahurin is the tale of Klara, a young Jewish woman, who, due to her inability to speak English, is railroaded by the justice system and institutionalized. At every step, Klara finds appalling conditions, inhumane treatment and filth.
To maintain a sound mind, Klara often recalls her past, happier days with her parents and siblings in Kiev. The only problem with these memories is the devastation that eventually drove her to America in the first place. She fled the Russian program that criminalized Jewish people and murdered her family. The abuse Klara experiences in Blackwell’s Island all too often reminds her of the cruel solider who destroyed her home.
A Different Kind of Angel is an eye-opening page-turner. We have come far in how we treat people with mental health issues, as well as foreigners. In these challenging times today, is a reminder of a place we don’t want to go again. Heartbreaking at times, hopeful as well. A great read. Highly recommended.
Elizabeth Cochrane, aka Nellie Bly aka Nellie Brown wrote an expose on the Blackwell Island Asylum in 1887, after staying there for ten days where over 1,500 women were patients in the women’s asylum. That’s where she met Klara Gelfman, a young Jewish immigrant from Kiev, who in 1881 escapes from Russia to New York City and tells her story as a patient in the New York City Lunatic Asylum. The staff includes nurse Miss Rudman, Dr. Lucas Koch, nurse Sally and her boyfriend Roy, nurse Edith Preston, nurse Harriet Brownstone, nurse Barbara Lincoln, Albert, nurse Greta Smidt, nurse Candace Millhouse. Klara shares a six-bed dorm room with her friend Catherine Bigsby and four others Tillie, Annette, Rosie, and Amelia.
The story weaves back and forth from Klara’s present to her past life in Kiev, to her early days in the asylum, to meeting Nellie Brown, Nellie’s story, back and forth to other times in the asylum in those five years. Caught between the past and the present, she is sometimes in a confused in-between state. So much of it is about the inhumane treatment, squalid conditions, and the evil but there are parts that are uplifting. Who are the angels that lift Klara’s spirits?

Seeing these beautiful dogs being saved all because of your gemerouos heart makes me so happy. You are a shining star in your community and I want you to know I admire you so much. The mama pit with her pups would not have been saved if it were not for you providing the funds to help pull her for rescue and or adoption.
Thank you so much, Yvonne, for your kind words. It’s my pleasure to do what I can to help. And all the sweeter to share with my cyber friends. Hope you, your family, and fur kids are all well. ❤️
I am managing ok but had a rough patch with three days in hospital in mid- July. I am much better now and drinking a whole lot more water. Thank you for your concern and kind words.
I’m glad you’re doing better. And I hope you stay well for many years to come. ❤️
Those three elderlies being kept together is just wonderful.

I love their faces also. When free for the most part they really light up. Thanks for your kind words. ❤️
You can just see happiness all over their faces once they’ve been rescued. So beautiful. 😍
So true. And amazing how resilient most of them are, responding to loving attention so positively. And so fast. A joy to behold. ❤️
I never tire of seeing all of these happy mugs. I have a real love for the elderly dogs. Thank you so much for all that you do, my friend.
Me too, about the elderly dogs. They hold a special place in my heart and it’s a relief and joy when they are rescued–to live their lives out in comfort and with love. ❤
