A heartbreaking story about the truly horrible conditions of a woman’s insane asylum in the late 1800’s. A Different Kind of Angel is a fantastic historical piece that highlights the real-life agonies that women endured on Blackwell island. The story is narrated by a Russian Jew who escaped death in the Russian Kiev. When Klara first arrives at the asylum, she does not speak English and is subjected to many torturous nights of fear. When she meets another prisoner named Catherine, she realizes that kindness does exist. Catherine teaches Klara English, and the more she begins to understand, the worse she feels until Nellie is admitted in 1887, and her entire world is flipped upside down. I really felt for Klara and Catherine, who were admitted for no reason other than the fact that other people did not want to deal with them. It really made me think that a lot of women were subjected to unjust tortures and couldn’t do a thing about it.

This is such a powerful story about a women’s insane asylum. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised by the author’s writing. The characters were rich and well crafted, especially the villains. I’ll definitely be looking for more from Mahurin.

GOODREADS:

Paulette captures the essence of emotions in gripping story of how two cancer patients find each other and fall in love.
It is a tale of highs and lows. It is the sense of the mixed emotions thats grasped me as a reader. There are the emotions one would expect from being diagnosed with the most aggressive forms of cancer… fear of the unknown and the known, despair and hopelessness. But there are other feelings involved: the fear of being rejected, of not being wanted and the fear of losing one’s womanhood or manhood.Add to the mix unhealthy family relationships that cause even more stress and anxiety with a complete lack of empathy and even sympathy. And then add…The desire to be accepted and loved. The hope of new trials and medications, The effects of cancer and the after affects of treatment; The realization of success/failure and The determination to make the most of life despite the odds.Well worth the read and all proceeds go to charity.

I admit ignorance of French history and the circumstances covered in this book but boy, do I know about it now. The Dreyfus affair covers dark times of anti-semitism in the 1890s and the brave intervention of the writer Emile Zola who put his own life and reputation at risk by standing up for the man. This historical fictional account of those events is a real eye-opener and one cannot help but admire Emile Zola who risked all to follow his conscience.

The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap by Paulette Mahurin is a thought provoking story about hatred and prejudice in the late 1800s, much of which is still prevalent over a century later. The main characters are complex and rich, but I felt the main antagonist, Josie, who did a great job at making the reader despise her, was way over the top. I really wanted to see some type of confrontation between her and Mildred in the end. The later half of the book had me fervently flipping pages and I loved how each chapter heading included a quote from Oscar Wilde – good stuff.
GOODREADS:

What a marvelous riveting read! The story really grabs the reader. I found myself expecting the worst for Mildred and Edra and actually dreading the ending. I’ll say no more as I don’t want to spoil it for others like myself who have never been familiar with the history behind the story. It’s not the kind of thing I normally read and I absolutely loved it!

About The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap
The year 1895 was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; Richard Olney, United States Secretary of State, expanded the effects of the Monroe Doctrine in settling a boundary dispute between the United Kingdom and Venezuela; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for "gross indecency" under Britian's recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When the news of Wilde's conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted by the news of Oscar Wildes' imprisonment. It is chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing.
