This heart wrenching piece exposing a critical piece of not only American but world history is lyrically written and speaks to the soul. All you feminists, human rights activists, humans in general, this read is for you! Composed beautifully. A+

A harrowing and riveting portrayal of Jewish refugee from the Russian pogroms of 1881. Klara Gelfman’s loses her father during her voyage to New York. Alone and with little English she is mugged and accused of being a prostitute she lands in Blackwell Island Lunatic Asylum. In the asylum for five long years she exposed to the worse and the best of the human condition.

It is a heart-wrenching to read about the horrid, inhumane and violent treatment of the patients in Blackwell. However, it is also a testimony of the strength of the human spirit to rise, survive and find strength in one another.

Paulette Mahurin did an amazing job in capturing the history Blackwell Island. The story is richly researched, well-written, emotive, inspirational, and unforgettable. I highly recommend this book!

It is not difficult to be horrified by the level of cruelty that humans will inflict on one another, especially where prejudice and power are involved. There is much in this book that tells of the trauma, the emotional and physical scarring, and the horrors experienced by the victims of such torture experienced not only by those who survived the government pogroms against the Jews in late 19th century Russia, but also by those exposed to the depths of degradation meted out to those who found themselves inside the cruel, cold walls of the notorious Blackwell’s Island Insane Asylum in New York.

Based on the true story of Nellie Bly’s infiltration of the asylum and subsequent exposure of the abuses and brutality that occurred there, and on the experiences of many who fled Russia in the hope of making a new life in America, ‘A Different Kind of Angel’ tells the stories of Klara Gelfman and the other women she meets inside that institution.

The book certainly has its dark moments, but it also gives emphasis to the resilience and kindness of people like Klara and her friends Catherine and Nellie. These women are inspirational in their ability to rise above the pain and muck time and time again, reminders to us all of the power of encouragement and kindness in the face of hostility and fear.

Mahurin tells a compelling story. The characters are strongly drawn, and the depictions of the various behaviours of the inmates of the asylum are vivid and, one suspects, based on careful study and research. At no time is the narrative insensitive to the plight of the insane, nor to the individual qualitiies of each woman and her mental illness. The reader has a strong sense of how their lives and conditions could be vastly different given proper care, nutrition and some kindness, and feels deeply grateful to the few souls who showed these women as much compassion as they were able to.

Overall, the story is more encouraging than depressing, and most enlightening. Despite the darkness, the message of the story is positive and empowering, especially for those enduring some kind of misery or darkness in their own lives.

I read this book, attached to the historical aspect around the upheaval in Russia and the persecution of Jews in the years around 1887. I can only add to all the other reviews that this is a brilliantly, beautifully written story that is both tough and ugly to wrap your head around, but also a heartwarming ‘testimony’ to the resilience of anyone victimised Love can work wonders even under the saddest, most horrific circumstances! If you are not sure about this book – just read it. It is quite simply marvellous.

The suffering that 20 year old Klara Gelfman endured at the hands of those who believed they were superior, is a reminder that no man is better than his neighbour. But where there is hardship and evil, there is always compassion and light – and this book expresses both. Very hard to read in places, heart wrenching and emotional, but it is extremely well written and well researched. I shall be reading more from this author.

The title kind of reveals the story , foreshadowing what is going to happen; this makes the novel extremely transparent in its intentions. This is a book about a journey, more than an outcome. It’s about both rebirth and death. It’s also realistically written and heartfelt, although you’ll want to tear your hair out reading about the misfortunes that just seem to pile up on our protagonists.

Although the ending is sad, the story has an optimistic tone. Sarah has gone through a lot at a young age, but she sees the bright side of life. Despite of her own condition, she reaches out to love and to help another person like her. It is painful to read through the details of Sarah and Ben feeling ill and getting treatments, but the sadness can be offset by their love and Sarah’s cheerfulness. Other than the cancer, the two also have to deal with family issues, just like everyone else. A story makes you smile and cry.

This was a bittersweet read. With the challenge of losing a loved one to cancer, this story follows the journey of two people who fall in love and work through the pain and grief alongside their dysfunctional families. There was a lot of reality and truth in this story, and a lot that the reader can take home. I recommend to anyone who likes to read realistic and heartwarming reads.

Feb 26, 2019 Dean rated it really liked it ****
Everything can be taken from a man but one thing:
the last of human freedoms-to choose one’s attitude in any
given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.
Victor E. Frankl
The story of Helen Stein, a young beautiful teenager and his family, has left me drained and flabbergasted..
A jewish family that went through the fiery ordeal of the holocaust in nazi Germany!!
All her family murdered by the nazis..Helen and his brother must hide..
The SS brutaly murdered his parents and an elder brother by the evacuation of his house!!
And for a few years they find a hideout in an uninhabited farmhouse!!
But soon they will be discovered and then sent in cattle waggons by train to Auschwitz the death camp with his gas chamber!!

Her spirit unbroken..
She demonstrate the power of resilience and perserverance in this hell!!!
After being raped and humiliated again and again, she remembers what her father told her:
To be and stay alive it’s whats matter..

Even in Auschwitz facing the ugly grimace of evil, she finds comfort and friendship in Ester and others..
Sacrificing themselves they give her love and dignity!!!

Many years latter, she has survived and found a new beginning in the Staaten..
The tatoos with numbers on her arm are not the only scars she has to bear!!
With much tears she tells a young woman about the destiny of her family in Germany!!
She lived to tell her story..

Paulette Mahurin has written a powerful book, showing us the atrocities commited by the nazis, and the devastating meaning of the Holocaust for the jewish community in Europa!!

..”There was nothing that told me about Helen or her past, with one exception, but I had no idea what it meant.
It was a faded piece of material in a glass-covered frame that sat on the end table. The tattered swatch of dimly colored blue cotton had a floral print.
Little swirls of lighter shades outlined the design of the stained material.
My eyes went to a plaque attached to the bottom of the frame that read, “Nothing Lasts”.
I couldn’t help wondering,
What is this old fabric?
And what caused the rust-colored stains splattered on it that looks like blood?”..
Read the book, and you will know!!!

About The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap

The year 1895 was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; Richard Olney, United States Secretary of State, expanded the effects of the Monroe Doctrine in settling a boundary dispute between the United Kingdom and Venezuela; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for "gross indecency" under Britian's recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When the news of Wilde's conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted by the news of Oscar Wildes' imprisonment. It is chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing. Paulette Mahurin, the author, is a Nurse Practitioner who lives in Ojai, California with her husband Terry and their two dogs--- Max and Bella. She practices women's health in a rural clinic and writes in her spare time. All profits from her book are going to animal rescue, Santa Paula Animal Shelter, the first and only no-kill shelter in Ventura County, CA, where she lives.
