When Irma learns that her old flame has been arrested and charged with manslaughter and negligence, which she knows he would never do, she takes it upon herself to investigate for information to exonerate him. What she didn’t expect was where that would take her…

Wow, this book is amazing! It’s as much character driven as it is psychological thriller, and characters feel like they jump off the pages! The author vividly portrays them and the mystery in such a way that you will keep reading long after your bed time!

This intriguing novel is what I call a “wild card” thriller because it doesn’t fit neatly into any one category. It’s part murder mystery, part exploration of life’s enigmas, and part love story, and the author weaves these different threads into a complex and compelling tapestry. The underlying premise – which I won’t reveal – is quite fascinating and combines real world experiences with science, metaphysics and mysticism.

The main character, Irma, is someone we can relate to, and she’s easy to root for as she tries to vindicate her ex-boyfriend, who’s a heart transplant surgeon, from a murder charge involving one of his patients. The legal and medical environments and issues feel authentic, and the California setting adds appealing flavor.

Unique. Timely. Provocative.

I first discovered Paulette Mauhrin’s work when I stumbled across The Day I Saw The Hummingbird (if you have not read this – buy now! – it is fantastic) and knew this would be an author to watch. Irma’s Endgame, while in a different genre, is also full of beautiful prose. The characters are all well described and Mauhrin does a great job of putting you inside their heads. I was most drawn to Peter, Amelia, and Jeffery. I liked how current events were weaved into the story; I think it always makes it more interesting and easier to identify with. For me, there wasn’t a great deal of suspense because of the amount of exposition and at times I found myself skimming past parts to get back to dialogue or action. But for readers who want lots of wonderful description and internal thought, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with this story. 3.75/5 Stars

I did not think I was going to like this at first, as so many depressing incidents occurred to the protagonist. I’m glad I continued reading however, as I was gripped from about the third chapter onwards. Based around the actual case of journalist Nellie Bly who inlitrated an infamous New York assylum in 1887. Sadly, there are echoes in recent cases of mistreatment of vulnerable people in care homes.

Positive Mental Attitude

I’ve read a lot around “The Final Solution” and how the great “super powers” failed the Jewish people. How America and Britain closed their doors and limited the number of refugees they would accept because they didn’t believe the stories of what was going on inside Germany. This is a poignant demonstration of the cliche “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. I can’t say I “enjoyed” the book in the common understanding of the word but I’m glad I read it nonetheless.

About The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap

The year 1895 was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; Richard Olney, United States Secretary of State, expanded the effects of the Monroe Doctrine in settling a boundary dispute between the United Kingdom and Venezuela; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for "gross indecency" under Britian's recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When the news of Wilde's conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted by the news of Oscar Wildes' imprisonment. It is chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing. Paulette Mahurin, the author, is a Nurse Practitioner who lives in Ojai, California with her husband Terry and their two dogs--- Max and Bella. She practices women's health in a rural clinic and writes in her spare time. All profits from her book are going to animal rescue, Santa Paula Animal Shelter, the first and only no-kill shelter in Ventura County, CA, where she lives. (see links below on Ventura County Star Article & Shelter) To find out more please go the The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap on facebook or Amazon or e-mail us at the gavatar addresses. Thank you.
