RECENT REVIEWS FOR TO LIVE OUT LOUD
Kayla Krantz

Reviewed in the United States on December 19, 2019

I’m not much of a history buff, but I always find Miss Mahurin’s stories to be powerful and hard to put down.

To Live Out Loud is no different. It’s focused around the writer Emile Zola and the role that his work played in the Dreyfus affair in the late 1800’s. This was a dark period with lots of anti-Semitism. The account of the way this writer put his life on the line to try and save Dreyfus was compelling. And the effect that it had on modern-day France, even more so.

This is a beautiful story of standing up for what is right in a sea of wrong. It’s the perfect story for the world that we live in now, and I applaud the author for bringing this piece of history out into the open for people like me to discover.

I enjoyed the complexity of the characters in this work. They feel like real people, dealing with real problems. Which is a difficult feat to pull off for any author, dealing with stark realism. The story of a doctor accused of manslaughter is intriguing in and of itself but giving the lawyer a personal investment in him is the essence of drama and kept me turning the pages. An excellent work.

Paulette Mahurin’s “A Different Kind of Angel’ is one of those dark gems that cut straight to the bone and the heart of humanity. Blending fact with fiction, this historical novel is superbly researched and intricately detailed, lending to a truly powerful story marked with resilience, perseverance and darkness during a period in human history that has echoed into the present. the dark hearts of humanity, the uncivil and inhumane ways human beings treat each other, and a ever lasting story of struggle and camaraderie, Mahurin’s prose is like architecture, weaving together unforgettable characters in an unforgettable setting. Truly a fantastic read.

RECENT REVIEW FOR THE SEVEN YEAR DRESS

October 6, 2019

Paulette Mahurin perfectly captures the horrors of the Holocaust and the beauty of its survivors in The Seven Year Dress. Helen Stein is like any teen, until one day the evil of the Nazi regime comes for her. Forced to scrape out an existence in one of the Holocaust’s worst death camps, Helen still manages to find moments of dignity and beauty amongst the survivors. This novel made me cry many times over as Mahurin’s powerful writing washed over me. This one’s an emotional gut punch, but one well worth taking!

About The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap

The year 1895 was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; Richard Olney, United States Secretary of State, expanded the effects of the Monroe Doctrine in settling a boundary dispute between the United Kingdom and Venezuela; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for "gross indecency" under Britian's recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When the news of Wilde's conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted by the news of Oscar Wildes' imprisonment. It is chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing. Paulette Mahurin, the author, is a Nurse Practitioner who lives in Ojai, California with her husband Terry and their two dogs--- Max and Bella. She practices women's health in a rural clinic and writes in her spare time. All profits from her book are going to animal rescue, Santa Paula Animal Shelter, the first and only no-kill shelter in Ventura County, CA, where she lives. (see links below on Ventura County Star Article & Shelter) To find out more please go the The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap on facebook or Amazon or e-mail us at the gavatar addresses. Thank you. 1. Glad for any dog to be rescued…but especially the elderly ones.
Thanks for all the hard work you put in to help give them loving homes.

  2. Jean-Jacques says:

That is so great, you’re saving 401 dogs, and counting for 2019, in essence averaging over one per day. Truly something for which to be extremely proud. You and Terry and the authorship of your many books to support the generosity of your commitment toward these fellow creatures, sets an example to all.

Thank you both for what you do, and letting us know, is a needed reminder of the helpless in all walks of life.
