Father Disowns Homophobic Daughter in Epic Letter

It was very kind of 4JusticeNow to pingback to the article on a Father’s renouncing his homophobic daughter. A comment below has entered the dialogue. I took a risk in answering and wanted to share to open the conversation, for without communication how can hatred end?

the Bible says man must choose between Him and humans so she did all right in my opinion especially since the Bible says that homosexuality is an abomination to God!

Look to the heart of Jesus when you quote the Bible that was written a hundred years after his death. And, look to your own heart to all God has created and see if you can truly embrace that a baby or a child deserves to be castigated by its parent? What causes suffering? Step outside of what you think, what you believe, for a moment and look to the light within that is also written about in the Bible.

I respect your belief and faith, not your words of justification for hatred and acts that harm.

I write this with a hope that a light shines between us that we may embrace our differences civilly and see tolerance in a different perspective. And, that hatred on earth may end.

Peace.

About The Persecution of Mildred Dunlap

The year 1895 was filled with memorable historical events: the Dreyfus Affair divided France; Booker T. Washington gave his Atlanta address; Richard Olney, United States Secretary of State, expanded the effects of the Monroe Doctrine in settling a boundary dispute between the United Kingdom and Venezuela; and Oscar Wilde was tried and convicted for "gross indecency" under Britian's recently passed law that made sex between males a criminal offense. When the news of Wilde's conviction went out over telegraphs worldwide, it threw a small Nevada town into chaos. This is the story of what happened when the lives of its citizens were impacted by the news of Oscar Wildes' imprisonment. It is chronicle of hatred and prejudice with all its unintended and devastating consequences, and how love and friendship bring strength and healing. Paulette Mahurin, the author, is a Nurse Practitioner who lives in Ojai, California with her husband Terry and their two dogs--- Max and Bella. She practices women's health in a rural clinic and writes in her spare time. All profits from her book are going to animal rescue, Santa Paula Animal Shelter, the first and only no-kill shelter in Ventura County, CA, where she lives. You’ve opened Pandora’s Box. But like Leonard Cohen says, “it’s the cracks that let the light in” and if we don’t have these dialogues the hatred and harmful acts that come from it will never cease.

  2. Clowie says:

“And, that hatred on earth may end.” Yes!

  3. Simply stated, clearly stated, and stated with peace. Here’s another YES!

  4. natuurfreak says:

Very interesting .We need more tolerance in life.

  5. Doesn’t charity start at home?
How can we have peace in the world when we turn against each other at home?

Incredible post .Tolerance is a great virtue. We are in dire need today.Hate and resentment are tearing humanity apart. My regards.jalal

  7. I don’t think one should disown one’s children under any circumstances..well, short of mass murder, maybe.

  8. Selective quoting from the Bible is an old and nasty habit. It’s a big book. The people who want to highlight only certain passages should be sure to read the whole thing. They’ll be disavowing a lot of people and things in their own lives…

I don’t understand the commentor and I also have trouble understanding the father who said: ‘… parent disowning her child is what goes “against nature.” ‘ but then goes on to disown his child?!

My dear Persecution of Mildred Dunlap, please excuse the length of this post but I though it most appropriate to you specific blog & this particular post, as I am a loyal follower & student of Freud…

Four years before his death, Freud, by then world famous, received a letter from an American woman desperately asking for advice regarding her son’s “problems.” Freud’s kindly reply–written, as it was, thirteen years before the publication of the Kinsey report–seems extremely modern in its approach to homosexuality. Predictably, he ascribes this condition to arrested psychosexual development. Note, however, that he adamantly rejects the notion that homosexuality can be classified as either a vice or an illness, suggests that it need not be accompanied by neurosis, is skeptical about the advisability or success of any treatment, and appears to consider the happiness of the woman’s son of greater importance than his sexual orientation. After nearly fifty years of research, the most avant-garde psychologists have had little to add to this position.

    April 9, 1935

    Dear Mrs._____

I gather from your letter that your son is a homosexual. I am most impressed by the fact that you do not mention this term yourself in your information about him. May I question you, why you avoid it? Homosexuality is assuredly no advantage, but it is nothing to be ashamed of, no vice, no degradation, it cannot be classified as an illness; we consider it to be a variation of the sexual function produced by a certain arrest of sexual development. Many highly respectable individuals of ancient and modern times have been homosexuals, several of the greatest amoung them (Plato, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, etc.) It is a great injustice to persecute homosexuality as a crime, and cruelty too. If you do not believe me, read the books of Havelock Ellis [Ellis, a contemporary of Freud, was famous for his seven-volume Studies in the Psychology of Sex.]
By asking me if I can help, you mean, I suppose, if I can abolish homosexuality and make normal heterosexuality take its place. The answer is, in a general way, we cannot promise to achieve it. In a certain number of cases we succeed in developing the blighted germs of heterosexual tendencies which are present in every homosexual; in the majority of cases it is no more possible. It is a question of the quality and the age of the individual. The result of treatment cannot be predicted.
What analysis can do for your son runs in a different line. If he is unhappy, neurotic, torn by conflicts, inhibited in his social life, analysis may bring him harmony, peace of mind, full efficiency, whether he remains a homosexual or gets changed. If you make up your mind, he should have analysis with me!! I don’t expect you will!! He has to come over to Vienna. I have no intention of leaving here. However, don’t neglect to give me your answer.

    Sincerely yours with kind wishes,
    Freud
